The Practical RSO Training Course is an in-depth, 3-day course designed for individuals with responsibilities as a RSO working in a medical (Nuclear Medicine/PET), University or laboratory environment. This unique course provides participants with practical applications to meet CNSC and provincial regulatory requirements while dealing with radioactive materials or medical patients. This course is beneficial to institutions seeking accreditation by providing comprehensive training and certificates to its RSOs. The course has been approved by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association and follows the core competencies (excluding Class 7 TDG requirements) outlined for the Registered Radiation Safety Professional national examination to achieve the CRPA(R) designation. The course is also beneficial for those individuals wishing to write the examination and achieve the CRPA(R) designation. The RSO Training Course goes beyond textbooks. Taught by an experienced RSO, the course is designed to meet the current administrative and technical challenges in implementing a radiation safety program to meet CNSC requirements. Course tools allow participants to develop and maintain excellence in radiation safety program at their own facilities. Content Includes: Radiation physics and health effects Administration of radiation safety programs Regulations (federal and provincial) Practical applications Case Studies – commercial, medical and research Training and education of staff Exposure and dose control Radiation monitoring devices and equipment Radiation dosimetry Inspections and audits CNSC Administrative Monetary Penalties Class discussions and exercises supplement training material. Significant class time is devoted to practical scenarios. Who should participate? This course is ideal for professionals working with sealed and unsealed nuclear sources in hospitals, Universities, diagnostic imaging, laboratory environments, research environments, commercial applications or anyone requiring additional knowledge of a RSO. A certificate will be issued to participants who successfully complete the course. Course Instructor Joe Cortese, BSc (Physics), CRPA(R) is an experienced RSO, formerly from the BC Cancer Agency and is the current BCIT RSO. Joe is a highly sought after educator in radiation safety.
